Is your child delayed in language? It is estimated that between five and ten percent of all children show some forms of language and speech delays. It is important to realize that this does not mean they are just delayed in speech, the delays can also present themselves in writing, how they communicate, even their visual ability.

Some parents will notice their child is having a language problem when they are very young. Normally they will notice their child does speak as well or does not appear to be at the same level as other children their age.

There are many signs along the way that your child could be delayed. These are some things you should watch for, and should consult with your physician.

Do you have a hard time understanding your child? It is normal that the parents will understand at least half of what your child is saying at the age of 2 to 3 years old. By the time your child is 4 years old you should understand them almost fully, and others should be able to understand them as well.

Does your child have a difficult time differentiate the foreground noise from background noise?

Does your child know something one day but forgets it the next?

Does your child need to stay in their familiar comfort zone?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions it is best to seek professional guidance as these could be signs your child is having some forms of delay. If they do have a delay in language, this could just grow into a larger problem if not addressed early on, and cause them issues once in school.
